About TakeOver

Every year the York Theatre Royal Senior Management Team hand over the reigns to a new TakeOver team who are responsible for running everything from the programming of shows and events to managing backstage.Three years in, TakeOver has become a regular fixture in the theatre's calendar, and it just gets better and better. For TakeOver12, we have an exciting line-up of entertainment and events, ranging from theatre to comedy, music to dance. We will also be organising a variety of parties, workshops, open-mic nights, and Q&As, so keep an eye out for our festival programme.

Our TakeOver programme is aimed at audiences of all ages, and we pride ourselves on offering the sort of theatrical diversity that can be summed up in our mission statement: ‘a festival organised by young people for the whole community to enjoy and take part in’. We want to embrace the community that has so willingly given us the ability to act as fully-fledged theatre practitioners while most of us are still at school or university.

Over the last few years over 100 young people have been involved in running two very successful festivals at the Theatre Royal in York. TakeOver is the only scheme in the country that enables young people to run a professional theatre for a special festival period.
